Will Harvard, etc. even me a chance? What colleges should I be looking at?Does my URM ( under represented minority) status help my chances of getting into the Ivy League? I'm really interested in applying to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Columbia as well as Duke, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Washington University in St. Louis, The University of Chicago, and others. I am first generation Mexican-American/Guatemalan-American. No one in my family has graduated or gone to college yet ( except my sister who is a freshman at OSU this year).I come from a blue collar family, my father works in a factory and my mother is unemployed. I'm an inner-city kid that goes to public school. We make less than $60,000 so getting into a university that offers need-blind assistance would be perfect for my situation. Here is some background information on me: -I have a 4.5 GPA and am Salutatorian ( hopefully Valedictorian next year, my senior year). I take AP classes and the rest are Honors except for GYM and such. -I am the Girls' Swim Team Captain -Play three varsity sports ( Soccer, Swimming, Tennis) -Editor-in-Chief of my high school's newspaper -Secretary of the Multicultural Club -Secretary of the National Honor Society -Had a internship at a world renowned hospital this past summer where I conducted medical research -Won a state-wide essay contest -Broadcast club -Academic Challenge ... and many other EC's including volunteering My scores are average though: PSAT: 168 SAT Subject Tests: Spanish w/ Listening (590) and Literature (490) ACT:23 To my defense I never studied for either tests and actually I never even took a Literature class in school( which was, yes, stupid on my part. Oh well.) I took the tests on the spur of the moment and plan to retake them and take the SAT for the first time soon. These scores are not permanent. They will get better. I am only a junior so I can still get a 30+ ACT or great SAT score.... Read More »
